Shaped plants

Shaped plants

We could define green sculptures the plants formed in this way.

The art of pruning trees and shrubs in such a way as to give them geometric shapes or other shapes than their natural form it is called topiary art, the mixture of art and technique performed by skilled hands.

We talk about art because the gardeners who take care of the pruning of these plants are real sculptors who are able to draw from the plants the most extraordinary forms.

The formed plants are therefore used purely for ornamental use. Usually the shape is given to a single plant that is placed at the entrance of driveways, shops, houses, gardens and constituting a real green furniture.

Pruning should take place at least twice a year, but of course in the case of particularly complex forms it may be necessary more often.

The buxus is certainly the most suitable species to realize vegetal sculptures thanks to its small but very thick and regular foliage that creates a perfect texture to realize even the most complicated forms.

Also holly or ilex lends itself to this use, as indeed the laurel that with its conical shape is very suitable for spherical representations.

The taxus as the buxus is a rustic plant that therefore adapts easily to all types of terrain and climate, is long-lived and therefore perfect for realizing elaborate works from dark green color.

In the nursery we have a large assortment of plants suitable for this use, both as variety and as size.

You can request a visit to the nursery and you will be accompanied by our staff who will advise you.

Even if the cultivation in soil is optimal, it may be convenient also that in vase, especially when the temperatures are very rigid seen that the mimosaceae do not tolerate much the frost.

Shrubs

Shrubs

The shrubs include all those woody and perennial plants that have a branch already from the base and heights that do not exceed 5 meters. These characteristics differentiate them from trees.

Almost all of them are suitable to be used for the green furnishing of gardens, to delimit the boundaries, to create fascinating shapes and colors in the hedges or in the flowerbeds and to have a living green space in every season.

There are shrubs for all climates and all types of terrain, from rocky to wetter. The composition of the terrain and the environment that will hold the plant is of course very important and on it must be based the choice of the most suitable variety.

The varieties of our shrubs

In our nurseries we have many varieties of shrubby plants that differ according to their use, even if they are almost always suitable for use in gardens.

The aromatic plants are small and with a bushy posture, for instance the lavandula, the juniper, the hipericum and the rosemary, excellent for defining the borders and for their use in the kitchen.

The climbing shrubs are perfect to decorate outdoor spaces and create very suggestive dividers. Wisteria, jasmine, ivy, rose, bougainvillea are just some of the climbing varieties found in our nurseries.

Then there are the deciduous-leaved or evergreen shrubs such as myrtle and hawthorn, and also those flowering able to make very bright colors and give a colorful image to the whole garden: from roses, azalea, hydrangeas, you just have to choose the flower and the preferred color.

Hedge

Hedges

Hedges are synonymous with shelters.

They delimit the boundaries, they create privacy but above all they protect from the wind and contain mesh atmospheric agents.

Usually, evergreen shrubby plants are used forming screens green coloured all over the year of , and which can be enriched of other colours in some seasons.

Protecting the spaces in a natural way and at the same time making them beautiful is possible by choosing the ideal plants for the creation of hedges.

Evergreen, deciduous, tall or low stem plants, but also climbing plants, are different from each other, but each has characteristics that make them perfect depending on the type of soil and place to be protected.

For example, if the hedge is to be used to fence a space and mark a boundary, trees and shrubs should be selected in accordance with the regulations governing the minimum distances between one property and another. In the civil code they are indicated exactly according to the type of plant used and our staff will be able to indicate the best hedge plants according to your space.

To make the hedge homogeneous it is always good to use the same plant throughout the perimeter, or the maximum of 2 or 3 three varieties, so as to have a greater ease in maintenance and care operations.

The most widely used varieties of plants for making hedges

Among the most used evergreens plants, especially for the good growth and the ease of care, there are the lauroceras, the ligustr, the buxus and the Cupressocyparis Leylandii.

The lauroceraso reaches even the 7 meters of height is easy to cultivate and is hardly attacked by parasites, that’s why it is well suited to this use.

Even the Ligustro reaches considerable heights and is really little demanding in terms of maintenance.

The Cypress is perfect for those who want to get a real plant wall, impenetrable and fast growing.

But among all species, boxwood or buxus is the king of hedge plants. An evergreen shrub with a thick foliage that can be shaped in any shape.

For this characteristic it is much appreciated and used in topiary art.

With buxus, however, it is not necessary to hurry, its growth is in fact rather slow: with its 7 cm per year at most it can reach the 3 metres. The slow growth is however balanced by its great longevity and its versatility in cultivation that makes it perfect for growing both in soil and in container. Much attention must be paid to its pruning, which must be done twice a year, in order to allow a proper development.

In our nurseries you can touch and observe closely many varieties of hedge plants and choose together with our agronomists the ones best suited to your needs.

Conifers

Conifers

When you think of trees the first image is undoubtedly that of conifers, all those beautiful evergreen plants characterized by the green color in a thousand shades, which naturally fill and give life to entire woods.

They belong to the Gymnosperme family and grow optimally in mild and temperate climate zones. That’s why they are perfect for furnishing green spaces in Italy and in general in Europe.

Rightly for their easy adaptation in the environments with mild climate, they are much utilized for decorating parks and gardens, but in the small dimensions they may find also in vases.

The erect and much ramified stem, the needle-like leaves and the conical fruits are the characteristics that identify them more and make them recognize them at a first and fast look.

It is not by chance that the name comes from the Latin Coniferum, literally cone and carry, which identifies all those trees that produce a woody fruit and similar in shape to the cone.

Mainly they develop in the form of a tree, even if some varieties can be found which are well suited to the growth in shrubby form.

Firs, larches, pines, sequoia and cypresses are the most common conifers of which in nursery we have a wide choice of variety and size; but even the smallest shrubs such as juniper and mountain pine are placed in our crops.
